Patrick Byrne

Our History

In early 1999, Dr. Patrick M. Byrne recognized the potential in liquidating excess inventory through the Internet. Up until then, bargain-seeking consumers had relied upon far-off outlet centers with crowds and limited product selections. In addition, small retailers had little access into the world of closeout merchandise. Online shopping was still in its early stage, but six months later, and with no outside funding, Overstock.com launched with the mission to be the premier company to sell excess inventory through the Internet. Overstock.com quickly became an online leader in a market valued at $60 billion in the United States. Overstock.com's GAAP revenue has grown from $1.8 million in 1999 to nearly $1.1 billion in 2012. Overstock.com now offers nearly one million products on its site. Since its October 1999 launch, Overstock.com customers have saved millions of dollars off manufacturers’ recommended retail prices.
Overstock.com is a Utah-based company, employing nearly 1,300 people. Overstock.com encourages its employees to participate in the community and has developed a great esprit de corps from participating in food drives, the Salt Lake Clean Air Challenge and other community projects.
Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne
In January 2011, Overstock.com acquired the O.co URL and began incorporating it into parts of its brand. The name change was applied to Overstock.com’s international and mobile businesses, the cars business, as well as the O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California. Overstock.com CEO Dr. Patrick M. Byrne has said, “When we first started our business in 1999, we only sold surplus inventory. We are no longer just an online liquidator. Our current offerings span from furniture and home decor to cars. We want an identity that more accurately reflects our company as it has evolved: hence 'O.co'. We still carry all of the same products and have award-winning customer service, the same $2.95 or lower national shipping and customized shopping features.”

Dance of the planets

Observe 'dance of the planets' from May 24

The dance of the planets — Venus, Mercury and Jupiter from May 24 to May 31 will leave you amazed
Line up of Mercury, Jupiter and Venus

The last week of May will observe a rare and beautiful cosmic choreography immediately after sunset. You will be able to see a “dance” of the planets followed by their vertical alignment on May 30 and 31 in the evening sky.
It will be an astonishing view for everyone and an opportunity for astrophotography enthusiasts. The dance will play itself out near the horizon in the west-north part of the sky. Three planets of our solar system will be participating in this rare cosmic event, i.e, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter.

This so called dance is only an apparent motion of the planets in the evening sky.  They will “spin” around each other changing their positions in the sky from one night to the other making their outstanding presence felt.

This phenomenon will take place from May 24 to 30 this year and will be visible to the naked eye each night, although binoculars will be the best tool to observe it as Jupiter will be making a remarkable appearance this month.
The planets after this event will slowly move behind the sun and will disappear by nightfall.

On May 13, the planets Jupiter and Venus and the moon started to group in the western part of the night sky. As the date May 23 will approach, the bright planets Jupiter and Venus will be close enough to fall under a binocular field of view.

They will come very close to each other by May 28.
Afterwards, Venus will move in a northwesterly (to the upper right) direction with respect to Jupiter. At that point it will be six times as bright as Jupiter.
From May 24th to 29th, Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury will all fit within a 5° circle. Thus, they can all be viewed simultaneously through binoculars.

What Is the Stock Market?

What Is the Stock Market?

Basics for bulls and bears

bull market
The word stock simply refers to a supply. You may have a stock of T-shirts in your closet, or a stock of pencils in your desk. In the financial market, stock refers to a supply of money that a company has raised. This supply comes from people who have given the company money in the hope that the company will make their money grow.
A market is a public place where things are bought and sold. The term "stock market" refers to the business of buying and selling stock. The stock market is not a specific place, though some people use the term "Wall Street"—the main street in New York City's financial district—to refer to the U.S. stock market in general.

Why Companies Issue Stock...

If a company wants to grow—maybe build more factories, hire more people, or develop new products—it needs money. It could get a loan from a bank. But then it would owe money. By issuing stock, a company can raise money without going into debt. People who buy the stock are giving the company the money it needs to grow.
Not every company can issue stock. A business owned by one person (a proprietorship) or a few people (a partnership) cannot issue stock. Only a business corporation can issue stock. A corporation has a special legal status. Like a school, its existence does not depend on the people who run it. Under the law it is separate from the people associated with it, and has special legal rights and responsibilities as well as its own unique name.

...And Why People Buy It

Owning stock in a company means owning part of that company. Each part is known as a share. If a company has issued 100 shares of stock, and you bought one, you own 1% of that company. People who own stock are called stockholders, or shareholders.
Stockholders hope the company will earn money as it grows. If a company earns money, the stockholders share the profits. Over time, people usually earn more from owning stock than from leaving money in the bank, buying bonds, or making other investments.

One Man, 5,000 Votes?

Stockholders in a company usually have voting rights. They vote on such issues as who will be elected to the board of directors—the group of people who oversee company decisions—and whether to buy other companies. Stockholders typically have one vote for each share they own. Every vote counts, but a stockholder with 5,000 shares will have more influence on the company than someone with only one share.
Most companies have annual meetings, where stockholders cast votes and ask questions of the company's leaders. If they cannot attend, stockholders may use an absentee ballot to vote. Shareholders also receive quarterly and annual reports that tell them how the company is doing.

What Goes Up Earns Bucks

When the price of a particular stock rises, that stock is said to be "up," meaning up in price. When the price falls, the stock is said to have gone "down." The terms "up" and "down" are also used to describe the rise and fall of the market as a whole.
As a company makes money, the value of its stock goes up. For instance, pretend you bought some shares of stock for $10 each. Since you share the company's profits, if it does well the shares might later be worth $15 each. You could then sell your stock and make $5 on each share. If the company loses money, however, you would also share its losses. Those $10 shares might each be worth $3 if the company fell on hard times.

Those Funny Fractions

In April 2002, all stock exchanges in the U.S. began trading their stocks in dollars and cents.
For instance, the price of a particular stock might go up $1.10. This means that the price of a stock increased $1.10 over its previous price. If a share of stock had been worth $10, it would now be worth $11.10.
This is different from the earlier system, when stocks were traded in fractions based on 1/8th. If a stock worth $10 went up 1 and 5/8ths, it meant that the stock had risen $1 plus 5/8ths of a dollar in price, or a total of $1.62. In other words, if each share had been worth $10 previously, it would now be worth $11.62.
But why divide each dollar into eighths when it could simply be divided into hundredths—a hundred pennies, to be exact? It's because the U.S. dollar is a relatively new kind of currency. When the stock market opened at the end of the eighteenth century, prices were based on the Spanish dollar, which is divided into eighths.

Of Bears and Bulls

Bears are cautious animals who don't like to move too fast. Bulls are bold animals who might charge right ahead. An investor is said to be "bearish" if he or she believes the stock market will go down. A "bearish" investor will buy stock cautiously. A "bullish" investor believes the market will go up. He or she will charge ahead and put more money into the market. An investor can be bearish or bullish about a particular kind of stock.
Likewise, the term "bear market" describes a time when stock prices have been falling on the whole. A "bull market" is a period when stock prices are generally rising.

Hudson County students

Hudson County students become 'CSIs' at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

PHOENIX --  Thursday was a very busy day for us. We had to help out with the Public Day of the 2013 Intel ISEF, during which the fair is open to students from all over Phoenix to spark a scientific interest in every one of them.
Our assignment was to facilitate in a lab activity called the Forensic Science Challenge; students were given the opportunity to play the role of crime scene investigators by analyzing given pieces of evidence to determine the perpetrator(s) in a hypothetical homicide.
In the lab, we were the "CSIs”''assigned to help the students in their investigation, giving them relevant clues about the case.
After our assignments were complete, we decided to grab some lunch and check out some of the finalists’ exhibits; this was the most amazing part of the day. Each and every project was a reflection of the hard work and dedication of students who were passionate about science.
The Exhibit Hall represented a haven in which students from every region of the social spectrum could come together and share their scientific passion.
Later on, we returned to the hotel to prepare ourselves for the Special Awards Ceremony.
When we arrived back at the Convention Center, we decided to relax in the E-LOUNGE since today was the last day that it would be open. The interior designer of the room gave us handfuls of special elastic wristband inspired by the work of last year’s finalists exclusively for this year’s Intel ISEF participants.
The students were not the only visitors on Public Day. The expo area also hosted several visitors from the animal kingdom, including rattle snakes, lizards, tortoises, and special little alligator named "Stubby."
Stubby lost his tail in an accident and was fitted with an ergonomically correct replacement tail.
Soon after, we said our final goodbyes to the many friends we had made in the E-LOUNGE over the past week and made our way to the award ceremony. The award ceremony, though very long, was inspiring. It encouraged me (Chrystal) to work extremely hard next year on my science fair project in hopes of being a finalist at Intel ISEF 2014.
Overall, we had a very eventful day. This week was most certainly one to remember, full of memories that will last a lifetime.

'quantum' computer

Nasa buys into 'quantum' computer

A $15m computer that uses "quantum physics" effects to boost its speed is to be installed at a Nasa facility.
It will be shared by Google, Nasa, and other scientists, providing access to a machine said to be up to 3,600 times faster than conventional computers.
Unlike standard machines, the D-Wave Two processor appears to make use of an effect called quantum tunnelling.
This allows it to reach solutions to certain types of mathematical problems in fractions of a second.
Effectively, it can try all possible solutions at the same time and then select the best.
Google wants to use the facility at Nasa's Ames Research Center in California to find out how quantum computing might advance techniques of machine learning and artificial intelligence, including voice recognition.
Chief technology officer, D-wave
University researchers will also get 20% of the time on the machine via the Universities Space Research Agency (USRA).
Nasa will likely use the commercially available machine for scheduling problems and planning.
Canadian company D-Wave Systems, which makes the machine, has drawn scepticism over the years from quantum computing experts around the world.
Until research outlined earlier this year, some even suggested its machines showed no evidence of using specifically quantum effects.
Quantum computing is based around exploiting the strange behaviour of matter at quantum scales.
Most work on this type of computing has focused on building quantum logic gates similar to the gate devices at the basis of conventional computing.
But physicists have repeatedly found that the problem with a gate-based approach is keeping the quantum bits, or qubits (the basic units of quantum information), in their quantum state.
"You get drop out… decoherence, where the qubits lapse into being simple 1s and 0s instead of the entangled quantum states you need. Errors creep in," says Prof Alan Woodward of Surrey University.
One gate opens...
Instead, D-Wave Systems has been focused on building machines that exploit a technique called quantum annealing - a way of distilling the optimal mathematical solutions from all the possibilities.
Annealing is made possible by physics effect known as quantum tunnelling, which can endow each qubit with an awareness of every other one.
"The gate model... is the single worst thing that ever happened to quantum computing", Geordie Rose, chief technology officer for D-Wave, told BBC Radio 4's Material World programme.
"And when we look back 20 years from now, at the history of this field, we'll wonder why anyone ever thought that was a good idea."
Dr Rose's approach entails a completely different way of posing your question, and it only works for certain questions.
But according to a paper presented this week (the result of benchmarking tests required by Nasa and Google), it is very fast indeed at finding the optimal solution to a problem that potentially has many different combinations of answers.
In one case it took less than half a second to do something that took conventional software 30 minutes.
A classic example of one of these "combinatorial optimisation" problems is that of the travelling sales rep, who needs to visit several cities in one day, and wants to know the shortest path that connects them all together in order to minimise their mileage.
The D-Wave Two chip can compare all the possible itineraries at once, rather than having to work through each in turn.
Reportedly costing up to $15m, housed in a garden shed-sized box that cools the chip to near absolute zero, it should be installed at Nasa and available for research by autumn 2013.
US giant Lockheed Martin earlier this year upgraded its own D-Wave machine to the 512 qubit D-Wave Two.
